What this schooler is saying is not unanimous as he is claiming. Actually, pioneer of these types of thinking is Mohammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab and Ibn Taimiah before him.
This school of thought (Ahl e Hadith) claims that, any affair related to religious activity must be directly mentioned in Quran and/or Hadith; If it is not directly mentioned, then it is Haram. And they don’t stop there, they only take Hadith from only a Handful of hadith books; And even in these hadith books (mostly Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Daud, Nasai, Musnad e Ahmed and Ibn e Maja), they only accept the Hadith that only schoolers of their school of thought (Ahl e Hadith) thinks as Sahih. If any Hadith, which schoolers of other school of thought takes as Sahih, goes against their set of believes, then they simply ignore it and claims it to be Daif (week) or Moudu (fabricated), even if that hadith is from Sihah Sittah (mentioned list above). So obviously, according to these schoolers, the list of BidaAh (Religious Innovation) is very long.
As opposed to what he claimed, there are many schoolers who don’t think that celebrating Prophet’s Birthday is Haram or BidaAh. There are countless narrations which claims that the sahabah did celebrate birthday of the prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon Him). Unfortunately, they will simply say that those Hadiths are fabricated.
I’ve talked to some schoolers personally who thinks celebrating Prophets birthday is not only permissible but also recommended; but they never claimed that if anyone celebrates Prophets birthday, all of his/her sins will be forgiven. So the schooler in question, is just refuting an argument which is not the argument of his oppositions at all.
Even if we agree that, there is no Sahih Hadith which claims that celebrating prophet’s birthday is permissible, it doesn’t make it a bihaAh (innovation). Since according to Quran and Sunnah, bidaAh is an act directly related to Ibadah (worship). If you do any kind of worship, basic of which is not defined in Quran or Hadith then that will be called a BihaAh (innovation to religion). Celebrating prophets birthday is not an act of worship, hence it cannot be a bidaAh. It’s like saying running madrasahs are BidaAh, since at the time of prophet there were no such religious institutions (which is ridiculous).
Any way, there are big debates about this issue among the schoolers. I only believe what feels right, according to my limited knowledge of Quran and Hadith. However, before any one decides which side is true, he/she must judge both side of the argument before reaching to conclusion. If you don’t have that capability then it’s best to remain silent. Since, calling a permissible act as a BidaAh is actually another BidaAh. Allah Knows the best.
